Welcome to the Club
If you’re reading this, you’ve subscribed to the History of Journalism Book Club.
Welcome!
My name is Eleanor Cummins and I’m a freelance science journalist based in Brooklyn. In June 2020, I started compiling a reading list of 50-odd books and counting that tell the story of American journalism—where we came from, how we got here, and what that means for where we go next. The goal is to create a resource for journalists who want to understand more about the history of this industry (because we certainly aren’t getting it in j-school or on the job) in order to advance equity in our coverage, institutions, and the country today.
Anyone can order a title from the reading list and dive in, but this book club will give the whole process a little more structure—and, hopefully, enrich your reading experience. Each month, we will choose one of the books to read and discuss in a virtual discussion group. By subscribing to this newsletter, you are agreeing to receive 2-3 emails/month informing you about the book of the month, supplementary materials and reflection questions, and details on joining the live discussion.
If you have questions, comments, concerns, additions to the reading list, or anything else, you can reach me any time at elliepses@gmail.com.
